Section 5. People's Choice Awards Contest Rules

  1. Definition – Competitive event for models, photos and arts & crafts including direct entries (Peoples Choice only) and those also entered in the judged model and photo competitions. Entries shall be displayed for evaluation and selection by popular vote by member attendees. Selection and ranking of the winning entries for all awards shall be determined by the number of votes received. Attendees shall be permitted to submit one ballot voting for one entry in each category and for each special award.
  2. Scale – All model scales shall be combined in each of the categories. There shall be no divisions of entries within each category for different scales.
  3. Categories
    1. Models
      1. Locomotive – All types of locomotives including those powered by steam, diesel, electric and other means. The model must include an electric motor or other means of propulsion and be capable of operation to be eligible for the category.
      2. Rolling Stock – All types including passenger, freight, non-revenue cars and powered rail buses and RDC cars. Cabooses are not included in this category.
      3. Caboose – All types including traditional, bobbers, drovers and transfers types.
      4. Structures – All types of structures. No detached detail or scenery or other scenery material shall be allowed.
      5. Display – Modeled scenes which may include structures, detached detail and other scenery elements.
      6. Train – An assembly which must include one or more locomotives(s) and at least one piece of rolling stock and/or at least one caboose.
    2. Photos
      1. Model Print – All photographic prints of models.
      2. Prototype Print – All photographic prints of prototypes.
    3. Arts & Crafts
      1. General - General craft entry of any theme
      2. Railroadiana - Craft entry with railroad motif
      3. Needlepoint - Needlepoint entry - any theme
  4. Awards
    1. Place Awards – Plaques shall be awarded for first, second and third places for the categories of Train and the Photo Match Contest as well as all Arts & Crafts categories and first place plaques for the categories of Locomotive, Rolling Stock, Caboose, Structure, Display, Prototype Print & Model Print.
    2. Special Contest Events: These are special sub-competitions that may be entered with seperate awards for certain types of models in addition to the normal judging. These need to be checked off on the entry form:
      1. Photo Match (model) – This comprises a special category that selects the model which most closely matches the supplied photograph. All categories of models are permitted.
      2. Most Humorous (Thumbs) – This comprises a special category open to all types of humorous models and whimsical creations (Subject to availability of award). First, second and third places are awarded in this event.
      3. Most Creative Model of Original Design – As noted
      4. Best Structure of Original Design – As noted

      Entrants should also note that models entered in the Judged Model Contest are also eligible for these Awards.

    3. NMRA Special Awards
      1. Best of Show – For each category group including Model, Photo and Arts & Crafts
    4. Sponsored Special Awards – The award listed below is currently slated for the 2008 Anaheim Convention. However, because such awards are sponsored by outside manufacturers, any given award may or may not be given at a particular contention.
      1. Bar Mills Favorite Model Award
      2. Arts & Crafts Theme Award – Awarded to best entry depicting that year's theme. The theme is designated by the Contest Chairman (this award may or may not be included at any given convention).
      3. Arts & Crafts Best of Show Award – Shall be awarded to the item receiving the highest number of popular votes.
